term 3 school holyday article (ingrown toe nail)

On term 3 of the school holydays Mark Ponirovsky a student at Christian Brothers’ College set a new record for himself he set out a painful record managing to have his 6th ingrown toe nail operation awake. Mark has had his painful ingrown toe nails for over  two years on each of his big toes on both sides of the toes, and has managed to see the inside of his toe. One of the questions the doctor raised during the operation was, “Is this ever going to end?”. The doctor has operated on Marks toes six times.

An ingrown toenail is a painful condition of the toe. It occurs when a sharp corner of the toenail digs into the skin at the end or side of the toe. Luckily there are ways to prevent this from happening to you. Tight-fitting shoes or high heels cause the toes to compress together and pressure the nail to grow unusually. The incorrect trimming of toenails can also cause the corners of the nail to dig into the skin. Nails should be trimmed straight across, not rounded. Disorders such as fungal infections of the nail can cause a thickened or extended toenail to develop. Even an injury near the nail or anything that causes the nail to be damaged frequently (such as playing soccer) can also cause an ingrown nail. If a member of your family has an ingrown toenail, then you are more likely to develop one too.

Mark borrowed crutches for the weekend and rested his foot and then came back to the doctors on the next three days after the operation. They got rid of all the bandages and he's now recovering at home following these simple but effective steps to prevent another ingrown toe nail. Mark is now able to have showers and play soccer with his mates again.
